“Wow – it must be so glamorous working on board!!”
Do you hear those words, yet in reality a seafaring life frequently induces a sense of disconnection and imposes stress on the nervous system.
A demanding schedule, reliance on air-conditioning, exposure to extreme weather, varying climates, lack of natural sunlight, constant motion, hurried meals, irregular eating patterns, dependence on demineralised water, sleep disruptions, and extended periods away from loved ones …☹
Can collectively contribute to overwhelm and the risk of burnout.
Introducing a holistic approach …
Passage to Wellness – Embark on an Ayurvedic Journey
For more than 5000 years, Ayurveda has served as a guiding star in the ancient Indian wellness system, emphasising the balance of mind, body and spirit.
Ayurveda comes from Sanskrit, breaking down into "Ayur" for life and "Veda" for knowledge, essentially forming the science of life. In a nutshell, Ayurveda is like an ancient guidebook for living a healthy and balanced life.
Similar to sailors navigating the ever-changing tides, Ayurveda observes nature's rhythms and honours the elements on the open sea. Focusing on harmonious balance of three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
Ayurveda introduces us to the power of personalised healing, utilising a treasure trove of herbs, oils, and holistic practices that resonate with natures pulse.
My Personal Ayurveda Journey
Get ready to unravel the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda, using its profound principles for the modern seafarer seeking a compass to well-being.
In April 2018, whilst working in Greece, a persistent stomach pain led me to seek medical help, navigating the challenges of onboard healthcare. A vague diagnosis left me puzzled, questioning its sudden onset in my 30s.
The challenges persisted, culminating in a near mental breakdown. The pandemic exacerbated delays in the ongoing investigations, and the emotional toll reached a breaking point, leading to my resignation from my position. The overwhelming sense of feeling lost and broken deepened, intensifying the perception of a crumbled world.
In September 2022, I revisited my happy place – a sanctuary in Bali and embarked on a 10-day Panchakarma (an Ayurvedic detox), seeking solace. During this transformative journey, I delved into the understanding of my Prakruti (dominant dosha), revealing my inherent constitution (the dosha I was born with) - dominant Vata/Pitta energy. This revelation became a crucial key to addressing the root cause of my stomach pain, highlighting the significance of embracing a Vata-pacifying lifestyle.
The outcomes were evident in the improvement of my physical health, mental well-being, and spiritual connection, achieved through the integration of nutrition, lifestyle adjustments, herbal medicine, breathwork, and targeted exercises.

Area 1. Your Doshas – Pitta/Vata/Kapha – which ones are you?

Area 2. Knowing The Elements (Mahabhutas)
In Ayurveda, the core principles revolve around grasping the essence of the five elements - Earth, Fire, Water, Air and Ether.
These elements act as the bedrock of all existence, influencing the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of human well-being.
· Earth represents stability and grounding
· Water is linked to fluidity and adaptability
· Fire is associated with transformation and digestion
· Air symbolises movement and change
· Ether represents space and expansiveness
Each dosha has dominant elements – under stress and strain your dosha’s can be out of balance and this is impacted by the representation of the 5 elements.
Understanding this knowledge gives you the tools to steer through the intricate facets of your well-being and make wise choices to maintain balance.

Area 5. Balancing your Dosha with Essential Oils.
Essential oils play a pivotal role in balancing the dosha’s, the fundamental bio-energetic forces in Ayurveda—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
Tailored to each dosha's unique characteristics, these aromatic oils can be incorporated into daily routines through practices like aromatherapy, massage, or diffusing.
· Calming oils such as lavender or chamomile help pacify excess Vata, promoting relaxation and grounding.
· Cooling oils like peppermint or rose can alleviate heightened Pitta, fostering a sense of calm and reducing heat.
· For Kapha imbalance, stimulating oils such as eucalyptus or ginger can invigorate and uplift.
Harnessing the power of these oils contributes to a harmonious balance of the dosha’s, fostering overall well-being in line with Ayurvedic principles.
